Questions

What people ask about legal matters back home.

Is Biladi a law firm?

No. Biladi is a cross-border case management firm. Legal work in Palestine, Jordan and Syria — filing, appearing in court, giving legal opinions — is carried out by independent attorneys licensed in the country concerned. We find and brief the right attorney, follow the case with them, and report to you in the United States in plain language. Biladi does not practice law in the United States.

Can a case back home move forward without me traveling?

Often, yes. In most matters a local attorney acts for you under a power of attorney that you sign in the United States and have legalized for use in the relevant country. Some steps can still require you to attend in person; if your case involves one, you will know early, not at the last minute.

Do I need a power of attorney?

For almost any case filed or defended on your behalf, yes. The attorney needs authority to act for you, and the document has to be properly legalized and cover the specific acts required — a general power of attorney is not always enough. Our power of attorney guide explains the difference between a general and a special power of attorney.

How will I know what is happening in my case?

You deal with one point of contact in the United States. We follow the case with the attorney, and after each filing or hearing you get a plain-language update — in English or Arabic — on what happened and what comes next. You never have to chase a lawyer in another time zone yourself.

Can you guarantee the outcome?

No, and nobody honestly can. Courts decide cases on the evidence and the law, and timetables depend on court schedules nobody outside the court controls. What we can do is make sure that the case is prepared properly and followed consistently, and that you hear the truth about where it stands.

Can a dispute be settled without going to court?

Often, yes. Many inheritance, land and business disputes end in an agreement rather than a judgment. Biladi can coordinate mediation between the parties, whether they are relatives, co-owners or business partners. Where the parties agree to arbitration, or a contract requires it, we can also arrange it through arbitrators and attorneys licensed in the country concerned. Biladi never acts as the arbitrator, and a licensed local attorney prepares or reviews any settlement agreement before you sign it.
